Tom Sharah: Top Five Childhood Memories

1. Watching 'The Little Mermaid' and the ABC taping of 'Into the Woods' on constant rotation.

2. Putting on fully-costumed one-man shows at my parents' dinner parties.

3. Having a very hard time pronouncing words — avocado was agicado for instance.

4. Singing my heart out to the national anthem at morning school assembly and then being brought up on stage by a teacher to demonstrate to the entire school how it's done. I froze in a nervous panic, and have never sung the song since.

5. Waking up every morning at the crack of dawn to draw pictures of my favourite performers and divas. I had the most impressive collection of coloured Textas and glitter glue.

See Tom Sharah in his cabaret show 'It's Raining Me' at the Brisbane Powerhouse December 5-7.

Top Five Things About Being In Lords Of Wong

1. Jimmy Dirt: I enjoy the freedom to express my freedom of speech freely. Sometimes I even feel like Ace Frehley.

2. The Colonel: The many doors that have opened for us. Mainly the exit doors we've been escorted out of. Watching Bizee Fingers knock himself out while moonwalking through the Step Inn’s toilets was a highlight.

3. Gerry: It has been an un-learning experience. Being in this band has made me significantly dumber. From my barely capable beginnings, I now find myself fighting the urge to eat trough lollies and I’m captivated by dramas like ‘Two And A Half Men’.

4. Scotty Wong: I like being free from the chains of mathematical precision. I like wearing my velvet suit. I like having the longest hair in the band. I like hiding in the corner, where I am relatively safe.

5. Bizzee Fingers: What do I like about being in Lords of Wong? What makes you think I like being in Lords of Wong? I enjoy the end of each Thursday night practice when I realise that I don't have to do that again for another week. I enjoy drawing blood from a fellow drunken Wong on stage or dry humping them to see that uncomfortable look in their eyes. I enjoy tweaking the nipples of society with my Flying V.

Lords Of Wong launch their ‘Club Bistro’ LP on vinyl at Beetle Bar Saturday November 30.

Woman Of The Beat: The Beat Goes On

This weekend, The Beat continues cranking its 30th birthday celebrations with 'The Women Of The Beat'.

Scene caught up with one of those women, Jen-E, who was in Brisbane for the filming of ‘Flow’ — a docu-tribute to Angus (RIP) (also a Beat DJ, and arguably both Brisbane's favourite and most talented exponent on the decks).

Jen-E, most well-known for her harder style born from event appearances in the late ’90s and early ’00s, has a diverse portfolio which includes breaks which featured heavily in later years.

“I won't bang it out hard for two hours. I'll play stuff that I used to play that reminds me of my best times there, on vinyl."

When asked about The Beat's longevity and its success, the resident between 1997 and 2001 says: "When it went off it was just magical — it was the favourite residency I've ever done.

"And I would have those magical nights as a punter as well when I went to the club when Angus and Edwin were playing.”

When asked about her favourite memories, there were no standouts "because all the times were good, but if I had to pick one it would be my CD launch where everyone was so supportive".

Apart from the magic, perhaps one of the secrets to the club's success is its diversity of punters and talent.

"I loved the fact that there was a drag show — it was annoying coz I'd play for 10 or 15 minutes, then I'd have to stop and watch it from the booth — the lewd jokes and everything, I loved it — it made the atmosphere really fun.

"After one generation goes through a club can die, but not The Beat. It was always just fun to be there."

‘The Women Of The Beat’ with Miss Tracey, Jen-E, Darlin, Akajic and Faith take control of The Beat this Saturday November 23.

[Publisher note] Jen-E was a dance writer for Scene Magazine in the mid-’90s and worked at Central Station Records in Brisbane.
