HEART TO HEART
After celebrating their first birthday last month, the Cheated Hearts crew are wasting no time bringing the party to you yet again. Cheated Hearts favourites Jane Doe, Frankie Trouble and The Gatling Gun will be joined by fresh faces CVLT Teens (a bass-driven duo inspired by TNGHT, Disclosure, Ta-Ku and Schohmo) and Virtual Illusion (a trap, electro, dubstep and indie phenom) at Coniston Lane this Friday Nov 15.
FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS
Secure your leather chaps right now, because the Sydney Gay And Lesbian Mardi Gras 2014 is offering Friends With Benefits members a new range of exclusive benefits to make the festival experience bigger and better than ever before. “We really wanted to create something for our members to acknowledge their support and contribution to making Mardi Gras what is today,” said festival producer James Rongen-Hall.
BI THE WAY
Lady Gaga has once again addressed speculation about her sexuality. “I am bisexual, I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again,” she told Attitude Magazine. “I don’t need to eat pussy in front of the whole world for people to take me seriously. You can believe it or not, it’s just here, I’m honest... take it or leave it. I know I am not just a lesbian — I have a boyfriend — but all of my friends are in this community.” She also denied that she is a “gay icon”, instead referring to herself as a “gay supporter”.
STRAIGHT TO THE POOL ROOM
Televangelist and anti-gay pundit Pat Robertson has won the ‘Bigot Of The Year’ award at the Stonewall Awards, held in London’s V&A Museum. The award is reserved for an individual who has gratuitously caused hurt and offence to gay people around the world. Robertson’s latest bizarre outburst came in August, when he said gay men spread HIV when shaking hands by using ‘special rings’.
Openly gay MSNBC anchor Thomas Roberts has condemned Russia’s anti-LGBT laws on a Kremlin-backed network while cohosting the 2013 Miss Universe pageant in Moscow. “I know the law is very vague, and it’s hard to interpret for many people,” Roberts said on state-sponsored network RT, “but it is discrimination, and that’s definitive. I don’t think that the LGBT population in Russia or anywhere should be marginalised to that degree. We are not asking for special protection, we’re just asking for equal respect.” Roberts also interviewed Antonin Krasovsky, a Russian journalist who was fired from a Kremlin-backed network after coming out earlier this year.
BROTHER FROM ANOTHER MOTHER
A white, anti-gay activist has won an election in Houston after leading voters to believe he was African-American. Dave Wilson convinced his predominantly black district that he was black himself by decorating his flyers with photos of smiling African-American faces that he lifted from the internet, and claiming to be endorsed by his “cousin” Ron Wilson, a prominent African-American. Wilson, who once sent out thousands of flyers attacking an openly gay mayoral candidate, says he won his seat on the Houston Community College Board of Trustees “fair and square”.
OUT OF THE CLOSET, OFF THE BENCH
A high school football coach in California says he was fired from his job for being gay. The Contra Costa Times reports that varsity football coach Burke Wallace has filed a suit against the Livermore Valley Charter Prep High School, alleging he was subjected to harrassment and discrimination after he casually told colleagues he was married to a man. According to the lawsuit, Wallace’s supervisors said it was a “bad idea” to have a gay football coach.
