MARRY A MAN
The Lonely Island have come out in support of gay marriage, sort of, in their new video for ‘Spring Break Anthem’. At first a song about roofies, beer bongs, beads and boobs, it somehow becomes a club banger about gay marriage — “let’s get fucked up and then find Mr Right and get monogamous”, the song says, because spring break is for “planning the menu, picking out flowers, nailing sluts, and writing our vows”. The clip features Zach Galifianakis, James Franco and Ed freakin’ Norton as The Lonely Island’s grooms.
OUT THE VOTE
The Greens will have another crack at getting Adam Bandt’s Marriage Equality Bill through Parliament, with a vote set for June 6. Despite recent breakthroughs in New Zealand, the UK and France, it’s highly unlikely the bill will pass — when it was last voted on in September, 42 MPs were in favour and 98 were against. The only way those numbers will change significantly is if opposition leader Tony Abbot allows his MPs a free conscience vote this time.
HERE COME THE DRUMS
A group of drummers promoting London gay event As One In The Park have been given a royal serve by Dame Helen Mirren (who was dressed as the Queen, no less) after their racket disrupted her performance in a nearby theatre. “She was saying, ‘shut the fuck up, people have paid a hundred fucking pounds for their theatre tickets’,” drummer Joe O’Leary told The Mirror. “She said the F-word about 20 times. I kept saying, ‘we didn’t realise’ and she was like, ‘just shut the fuck up’. You couldn’t get a word in edgeways, she was proper on a rant.” The incident was caught on tape; Mirren has since said she will attend As One In The Park.
FROM RUSSIA WITH HATE
A 23-year-old man has been tortured to death in Russia in an apparent homophobic attack. The victim’s beaten and naked body was found in the courtyard of an apartment building in Volgograd; he had suffered numerous injuries, including to the genitalia. “He was raped with beer bottles and had his skull smashed with a stone,” said Natalia Kunitskaya, a spokeswoman for the Volgograd branch of the Investigative Committee, who also confirmed the attack is believed to have been a hate crime.
THE BEST POLICY
Minnesota governor Mark Dayton believes his state’s NFL team, the Minnesota Vikings, released punter Chris Kluwe from his contract because of his support of LGBT issues. “Yeah, I don’t feel good about it,” Dayton told the Associated Press. “I just think sports officials ought to be honest about what the heck is going on.” Meanwhile, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has promised that gay NFL players “will be accepted” and that teammates and fans “will all respond the right way”.
THE OLD NORMAL
‘The New Normal’ — the NBC comedy starring Justin Bartha and Andrew Rannells as a gay couple looking to start a family — has been cancelled. But as one door closes, another opens — Sean Hayes (‘Will & Grace’), who finally came out in an interview with The Advocate in 2010, will star in ‘Sean Saves The World’, an NBC sitcom about a divorced gay man.
