BOOTIE WONDERLAND

It's been spreading across the world for the last decade and thanks to Guy Davy and Lola DJs; Brisbane is the latest city to be infected by mash-up night ‘Bootie’.

“The whole thing actually started in San Francisco but Adam (Lola DJs) and I wanted to do something a bit different in Brisbane, so when Girl Talk, Soulwax and 2ManyDJs started getting bigger and bigger and making a career out of it we decided to see if we could make a night of it.”
For those of you unfamiliar with the genre, mash-up started around the end of the last century and combines two different songs into one joyous sound that is sure to get your feet tapping.
“There are a couple of guys in San Francisco called A+D who run a club called ‘Bootie’ so we thought we would contact them and they said that since they already had the logo and all the material done up that we could start the night here in Brisbane under the same name.
“Brisbane is the only city in Australia to have one of these nights, which are run all over the world in places like London, Paris, Mexico, Berlin and New York.”
Guy says that anything from The Police vs Kings of Leon to Bon Jovi vs Rick Astley to Led Zeppelin vs Snoop Dogg, and everything in between, can be heard blasting from the ‘Bootie’ speakers. Of course the whole mash-up business is completely illegal, a fact that seems to egg Davy on.
“It's a great thing because it attracts people who like dance, electro, rock or 80s and the drawcard is that it's not serious like most other club nights, it's an invitation to come and dance on the speakers, have a singalong, get out the air guitar, pour beer on yourself and just play silly buggers,” he says with a slightly evil chuckle.
“The best thing about the mash-up style is that because there are no egos involved people can just get together and have fun. We tend to build the night up but at 12 we will have a midnight show, in fact for the next show we have a live turntablist mash-up organised and we'll definitely be playing that 'Fire In A Bottle' (The Police vs Kings of Leon) track.”

‘Bootie’ arrives at Beetle Bar May 9.
