Local Flow

Since their killer sets at this year’s Woodford Folk Festival, Laneous & The Family Yah and Dubmarine have been inseparable. You can’t ask one group to a party without the other tagging along, and it’s hard to go to a movie with the two groups without feeling like a third wheel. They’ll take their relationship to the next level with the launch of their ‘Mash Up’ EP - in which Laneous and Kazman trade ensembles - at The Zoo on Friday March 26.
Young (and old) musos looking to add a professional edge to their work should consider Q Music’s free songwriting, recording and production workshop at Southport Community Centre on Saturday March 27. Songwriters Sabrina Lawrie (Fuzz Parade) and Eddie Jacobsen (Butterfingers) and producer Magoo will do the talking.
The butler did it! Rising GC stars A French Butler Called Smith are headed to the Sunny Coast’s Maleny Show Grounds to play the Passion Tasting Festival on Friday March 26. They’ll be passing the hat around to raise money for orphans and widows in the Philippines, Africa and India.
Mark Saturday April 10 in your diary or calendar app - that’s when indie pop mastermind Joel Myles will deign to release his debut EP, ‘Kaleidoscope The Keys’, on iTunes. Or you could just rock up to the EP launch at The Troubadour on Friday April 9 and score a physical copy a day early. Take that, internets!
It’s live. It’s raw. It’s wild. It’s grunge rock circus cabaret. Sure, why not? Bursting into the Judith Wright Centre, Circa Zoo showcases talented young artists with a passion for the circus. Run away with them on Saturday March 27.
In their own words, The Young Liberals are “Brisbane’s finest exponents of every known musical genre”. They have so far concentrated their attention on garage rock, free jazz, lo fi punk and no wave, but hip hop, black metal and crunk albums are all planned for the future. Check on their progress at The Troubadour every Saturday night in April after 1am.
This is no April Fools’ prank - radical local composers Rob Davidson (Topology), Thomas Green and The Quadratic Contingency really are playing The Globe on Thursday April 1. The Contingency will be launching their debut self-titled EP, which fuses the musical styles of Europe with nu jazz and minimalism. Naturally.
They’re not quite sizing each other up for rings just yet, but Chocolate Strings and Oka are headed into Laneous and Dubmarine territory. They’ll play together at Villa Noosa (with Japan’s Keison) on Friday March 19 and The Zoo on Friday April 9.
