After starting out in 2009, Rochester natives Such Gold have been riding the delicious wave of success since forming the band fresh out of high school.“We just knew each other through the local scene, figured out we had a decent line-up and started writing songs together from there in 2009,” songwriter/ guitarist Nate Derby explains.
The young band have released two EPs and toured with such bands as The Wonder Years and Polar Bear Club. In August, they released their debut album, ‘Misadventures’, where they teamed with producer Steve Evetts (Every Time I Die, Saves The Day, Lifetime, The Dillinger Escape Plan).
“It was different working with a producer. Having someone, not quite dictating but helping us out with the final say. The album took us a year to write and came out 18 months later so when it was finally released we were stoked with how it turned out.”
Derby maintains the key to their success lies in Such Gold’s unique, “game-changing” and versatile sound within the hardcore scene.
“There’s a range of styles that operate within our punk, rock, hardcore genre. Lots of bands tend to focus on areas like super heavy breakdowns to the point where they’re uninteresting. We have tried to stay away from that and take the best bits from each genre.”
Derby says the band are looking forward to travelling to Australia again after being announced as part of the 2013 Soundwave line-up.
“It will be our second time over there but the first time doing a festival like this. To be sharing the stage with the crazy line-up, bands like Metallica, Slayer, it's really wild to be a part of that.
“Hopefully we will have some fans singing upfront so we could get some stage dives going… if that's allowed. It's just going to be a really high energy show, a lot of fast, punk rocking and hopefully show people what we're about.”
