Aside from playing regularly, he’s been busy mixing ‘rnb superclub Volume 11’. “For the last month I’ve just been staying in Sydney concentrating on the ‘superclub’ CD, being in the studio. I’ve been doing them for about five years, I love doing it because I get to play in different clubs and meet different people and stuff,†says Amenapave Roko, more commonly know as DJ Def Rok.
While his roots lie in R&B, Def Rok has been broadening his sound of late.
“My style at the moment is all the mainstream stuff, everything in the charts right now. It used to be full-on R&B but now it’s a bit more of a mash-up. Like in the main set you’ll hear all up-tempo stuff, everything in the charts. Even electro stuff. Keeping it alive really.â€
Def Rok finds DJing enough to deal with at the moment, but is keen to dabble in production in the future.
“I’ve just mucked around. The DJing stuff is just too hectic at the moment, but I’m getting my studio together now. DJ D-Wizard, who I did the CD with, has got a studio and I’ve been watching him, and learning from the production side of things. So probably next year I’ll be stepping my game up.
“I’ve spent the last ten years being lucky enough to actually make money off what I’ve been doing. I don’t take that for granted. In the next few years I want to get into the production side of things and see what happens with that.â€
After spending time in the US, he’s planning on heading back overseas whenever he can.
“Last year I spent a few months in the States and that was an awesome experience, going to LA, Vegas, New York, Chicago. Playing over there was amazing. But because of the ‘superclub’ CDs, I’ve got a ten-CD deal altogether, and I’m up to the seventh one. After that I’ll look into touring internationally, and into production stuff.â€
