Over the past year, Adelaide boys Mase N Mattic have gone from relative obscurity to hip hop notoriety. They’re on the bill for Sprung Festival alongside some of Australia’s biggest hip hop names like Hilltop Hoods, Illy and Pez. It will be their first Brisbane show, and Mattic says they’re only feeling a tad jittery.
“I'm sort of a little bit nervous for Sprung, but I guess on the flipside I'm sort of more looking forward to it. So I guess it counteracts it a little bit. It's mainly just ‘cause it's a big festival and we've never really rocked Brissie before, so it's gonna be cool to get down there and yeah, show you guys some of our tunes.”
For Mattic, being named on the Sprung bill has been an “honour”.
“Definitely. There are a lot of acts on there that we used to listen to when we were younger. These days we sort of have a different influence range but when we were younger we used to listen to these guys and they got us into doing what we're doing today.”
Despite being relative newcomers to the scene, the duo (turned trio – they’ve just added DJ PT to their crew) has experienced nothing but love from their peers.
“It's a big family. Everyone has the same sort of outlook on what they're doing and we're all just good mates, really.”
Mase N Mattic’s first single, ‘Nights To Inspire’, gained ample love on the Triple J Unearthed charts, and paved the way for their debut album, ‘Sound The Horns’. Now they’re back in the studio, furiously recording their second album, which will drop in 2013.
“It’s definitely a pick up from the last one. We're a lot more mature with our songwriting and our producing this time around. We're definitely taking a more professional approach to it and I guess it's just gonna be more of the same stuff but more mature.”
