After a close-on two decade career, Resin Dogs member Katch is anxious to hit the stage once again. “It feels good, it's funny because when we were doing our thing half of these acts weren't even around,†Katch says, referring to the line-up for the inaugural Sprung Festival.
“It's good to be on the bill and see some of the younger kids coming up and the people that we know of and have worked with before; it’s kind of like a hip hop camp.â€
Katch and the Resin Dogs don't see Sprung solely as a chance to perform to an adoring public, rather they have widened their scope to see the greater effect the festival will have on Australian hip hop culture.
“Sprung is solely dedicated to hip hop, it's a new thing being tried out that hasn't been done before on a big scale such as a festival without having to involve international and mainstream artists.
“To have a festival like this is very important, it gets to showcase many sides of the culture. People can come to this festival and see breakdancing, DJing and bands - it’s not all Americanism and it's not what mainstream media portray hip hop to be.â€
Although Sprung represents an opportunity for hip hop culture to grow and develop further in Australia, Katch believes more can be done.
“There definitely needs to be more outlets and avenues for hip hop,†Katch says. “Hip hop still hasn't got its own voice, we don't have a 24-hour hip hop radio show or a dedicated station so to have a festival like this is very important.â€
With three years having passed since the Resin Dogs released their last studio effort, ‘More’, Katch reveals the group is still hard at work on their latest project.
“We are working on a new release but we are taking our time, we like to take our time to make things right,†Katch says. “It's slowly coming together, we've got the basis of a record but we just need to finish off some of the collaborations. There are definitely a few songs that go in a direction that people wouldn't have thought we would do.â€
Resin Dogs will be joined by Drapht, Funkoars, Illy and others when Sprung Festival lands at Riverstage October 15. sprunghiphop.com.au
