Once upon a time everybody in Brisbane was jealous that the southern states got to head along to a little gathering called Falls Festival. But then Falls Festival changed its name to Sunset Sounds and headed north in hope of a better life, and everybody in Brisbane was happy. Um, that's actually a true story. Sunset Sounds is here! Take the afternoons of Wednesday 7 and Thursday 8 January off work now, because we know you'd rather be hanging at the Riverstage watching The Hives, The Kooks, Franz Ferdinand, Tegan and Sara, Gomez, Santogold, CW Stoneking, Ash Grunwald, Donovan Frankenreiter, Yves Klein Blue and I Heart Hiroshima. Tickets go on sale this Friday.
It's best that we get the bad news out of the way first. Unfortunately, reggae king Ernest Ranglin has had to cancel his entire Australian tour due to immigration complications, which means he won't be performing at Island Vibe festival. The good news is actually more like great news - there's still going to be at least 60 other acts delivering soul, roots and reggae vibes to Stradbroke Island on October 24-26.
Bloc Party have already sold out their shows in Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide and Perth. What does that have to do with us here in Brisbane you ask? It means that there's a couple of tickets left for their show here on November 28 at the Riverstage, but not many, not enough for everybody that wants to go. It means you have to get in quick if you're a fan and you want to see their epic live show.
Just a reminder that The Beat Megaclub's much awaited DJ comp will be kicking off soon, offering $120,000 worth of prizes under three categories - R&B, house and hard. It's all in celebration of the club turning 25 years old, so get in there and grab a slice of that cake if you've got the skills.
Doesn't it suck when you've been at a festival like Parklife all day and you're all dirty and you're missing certain items of clothing and you still want to carry on partying in the Valley, but no clubs will let you in? Yeah. You won't have that problem at 'Park Strife After Party' - the unofficial Parklife Afterparty at Planet Nightclub. The event - featuring Wahoo, Matt Kitshon and more - promises that anything goes in terms of fashion.
There haven't been too many complaints about the lineup for the 2009 Soundwave Festival, that's for sure. Read the following list and make your own mind up: Nine Inch Nails, Alice In Chains, Bloodhound Gang, Goldfinger, Alkaline Trio, New Found Glory, Funeral For A Friend, Lacuna Coil, Say Anything, Billy Talent… these bands and more will play at the RNA Showgrounds on February 21.
You know a festival has 'made it' when they take on Western Australia. Yes that's right folks Laneway Festival is back for 2009 and while it may be expanding geographically it's still going to have the limited capacity which means enough room for dancing. Organisers have also moved the Brisbane date forward to Saturday January 31. Expect the first lineup announcement in mid October!
If you've been complaining about the lack of underground electronica festivals being held in lush forest surroundings, well complain no more. Quantum Relic is three days of underground electronica featuring some of the worlds biggest acts and best local and interstaters, being held at the beautiful Landcruiser Park near Kilcoy. It's on November 14-16. Check www.quantumrelic.com.au for more information.
Brisbane has a new home for R&B. Mystique is a premier new venue that's all about the hippity hop and the rhythm and blues. DJs Maxwell, Bounce, Tuini, Vita and K Hustle will bring you the best of the sexy beats. Check out the quality on offer at 25 Warner Street, Fortitude Valley.
There's a little less reason to be jealous of the European festival circuit now that Global Gathering is headed to our shores. The latest addition to the lineup is Uffie's right-hand man, DJ/Producer Feadz, who'll be showing us exactly how they do upfront electro over in France. Feadz joins Kraftwerk, Gorillaz Sound System, Sasha, Felix Da Housecat, Fischerspooner and more at the Doomben Racecourse on November 29.
It's the southern hemisphere's biggest urban club event, and the new rnb superclub compilation CD is just as epic with 'smash hits' from Estelle, Chris Brown, Kelly Rowland, Christina Aguilera, R Kelly and more. There's going to be some dangerous grinding happening on the dancefloor when G-Wizard and Def Rok deliver the superclub grooves at the Rolling Rock in Noosa on October 3.
New Zealand's finest drum and bass exports Concord Dawn will be dropping into Uber on October 31 to deliver the beats, shortly before they head off to shows in Russia and North America. Tickets are $10 through the usual outlets.
News just in that former Smiths singer Morrissey and guitarist Johnny Marr are set to release a compilation of the old band's rarities sometime later this year. Apparently entitled 'The Sound Of The Smiths,' the first disc will contain 23 classics such as 'This Charming Man' and the second disc will contain rare or unreleased B-sides, covers and live recordings. You have to wonder when how many compilation CDs is too many - considering this is the fifth Smiths compilation and they only ever had four studio releases.
The International Songwriting Competition is back again with over $150,000 in cash and prizes up for grabs. There's also the opportunity to have your music heard by the ridiculously impressive list of judges, which includes Tom Waits, Robert Smith (The Cure), Ray Davies (The Kinks), Black Francis (The Pixies), Neil Finn, Chaka Khan, and more. More information available online at www.SongwritingCompetition.com
Note to up and coming local bands: when you hit the big time and find yourself playing at London's Wembley Stadium, don't go over your allocated stage time. Madonna was fined the Australian equivalent of $300,000 for running 40 minutes overtime when she played a show there in September. That works out at approximately $35,000 per song. Luckily she can afford it. Oh, one more Madonna scandal- she apparently dedicated her 1984 hit song 'Like A Virgin' to the Pope when she played a show in Rome a while back.
